"Surrealistic Selfie"

Self portrait: Take photos from multiple angles, different expressions or poses (profile, 3/4, full face), and make sure that some backgrounds are simple, uncluttered, consistent value, etc. to make extracting your image easier. You may need the assistance of a friend or the use of a tripod. Think about cropping - close up, head and shoulders, full figure…

1 point for the self portrait photo

Generative AI exercise: Experiment with the following generative AI online applications:

Practice your "prompt engineering" skills, and try using a reference image (one of your self portrait images). An overview of writing prompts is at https://www3.cs.stonybrook.edu/~tony/intromm//Prompts.html

Choose and download the image that best matches the story you want to tell about yourself, and add that image to your term project web site. Include the text prompt you used to generate the image, and the reference image you used. Email the URL to intromm@cs.stonybrook.edu, with Gen AI in the subject line.

Rubric:

1 point for the generated image, 1 point for the prompt

Synthetic Reality: The self-portrait exercise should feature masking and image processing techniques to create a synthetic reality in which you are clearly the subject in an imaginary scene. Avoid compositions that look like a bulletin board, with lots of objects stuck to the surface randomly. Try to get the elements to blend and complement each other to create a new virtual space. Captions should not be necessary - the narrative should work solely on the imagery. The portrait should present you in a mature and professional manner.

You should upload a 1024 X 768 png file to your web documentation (About Me page), and confirm the update by emailing the URL to intromm@cs.stonybrook.edu, with "self portrait" in the subject line.

To review some examples of portraits from previous semesters, check out the slide show linked below.

You might want to experiment with PS filters, or even with Google's Deep Dream algorithm. You can find the links on the Resources page under the software downloads section:

Enjoy the exercise and have fun.

Note: When you upload an assignment to your project web site on you.stonybrook.edu, there is a properties window for the selected media item in the lower right corner of the interface. You should choose “full size” from the drop down menu for "Size", so that WordPress does not scale the item automatically to the default (smaller) setting.

Rubric:

1. Followed the instructions:
• A multilayered self portrait image 1024 X 768 was uploaded to the About Me page of the student’s documentation.
• The image was scaled to full size on the term project web site.

2. Met the design criteria:
• Explored a variety of compositing techniques (hard/soft masks, etc.)
• Explored image processing techniques (filters, etc.)
• Related images and backgrounds were incorporated into the compostion
• Created a professional and engaging self portrait in a virtual space using good composition
• Good technical execution (crisp focus on subject, good detail, good lighting, etc.)

That’s 7 criteria, or approximately 1 point each
