Group Activity for IT Ethics

This is a shared activity that requires you to work with a study buddy. We will be using software developed by the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University. This app will help us explore another way of evaluating ethical decisions.

Go to https://legacy.scu.edu/ethics/ethical-decision/

It's an app you can either download for iOS or Android, or you can input your data through the web browser.

The software asks you to identify a problem. Your study buddy will pose a problem to you, and you in turn will present one back to your partner. You will need to keep notes as you go along, of everything you enter into the app when responding to prompts. When you’re done each of you will enter the your data into a Google form.

For each criteria used to evaluate your decision there is a link to a short article explaining that rubric. You and your partner should read each of those articles.

First the app will ask you to identify the problem. Here are the instructions from the start screen:

“What are the relevant facts of the case? What facts are not known? Do I know enough to make a decision? Which individuals and groups have an important stake in the outcome?

With the facts and the stakeholders in mind, choose a solution that you think might be the best thing to do in this circumstance. Now, evaluate that option from five different ethics perspectives. For each, drag the slider on the scale to indicate how ethical you think your choice would be from that perspective."

The app will then ask you to rank your proposal according to five ethical criteria:

Utility
Rights
Justice
Common Good
Virtue

Your partner will rate your solution over the 5 criteria, and you will rate theirs.

Select a value from the slider, then continue to the next criteria. In the final screen you can weight each of the criteria as you think it applies to your scenario. Now you can view your results in the app. How ethical was your proposed solution? The app also asks you to reflect on how your decision can be implemented with attention to the concerns of all the stakeholders.

You should consider what would be a good ethical dilemma to pose to your partner. This might also be a good starting point:
