Digital Audio

Acoustics is the science of sonic reflection

Oscillation of air pressure = sound waves

longer wavelengths have a lower frequency, shorter wavelengths have a higher frequency

frequency = pitch

amplitude = loudness

How a microphone & speakers work:

pressurized air (sound waves) causes movement of the diaphragm (and magnet and coil) of the microphone, which creates oscillations in the electrical current

oscillations in the current causes the magnet (and diaphragm) of the speaker to move, which results in pressurized air (sound waves)

in digital audio the oscillating current is converted to binary values (samples) by an Analog to Digital Converter (ADC)

the binary values are converted to electrical signals by a Digital to Analog Converter (DAC)

Digital Audio is the recording of a performance (narration, music)

https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/computer-science-fundamentals/what-is-a-microphone/

CD quality sound = 44kHz (sampling rate) 16 bit (resolution) stereo = 96 dB of sound

Cassette quality = 22kHz 8 bit stereo = 48 dB

Telephone quality = 11kHz 8 bit mono

Digital audio is the cousin of raster graphics:

Large file size, fixed resolution, not malleable, not discrete
Aliasing to compensate for missed samples

MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface)

Actually a serial protocol

Synthetic approximation of a live performance

Industry standard for electronically generated audio

128 voices in the MIDI orchestra

MIDI is the cousin of vector graphics

Small file size, resolution independent, malleable, discrete
