Class Discussions

Engage peers in social analysis of a selected challenge or theme, incorporating research findings, academic learning, and consultations with community professionals.
Attend all class meetings on time and stay for the duration of the class session, being fully prepared and participatory in discussions.
Participation is based, in part, upon attendance to the classes, group interaction, and active engagement in learning activities including providing evidence that the student has read the assignment and added value through thoughtful analysis, reflection, and presentation of the issues.
Excessive lateness and/or unexcused absences will result in the lowering of the participation and discussion grade.

Topic Reflection Papers (1-2 pages)

To reflect on prior Class’s presentations and discussion and prepare for informed discussion

Identify goals for the capstone related to major/minor.
Assess the current state of small cultural institutions related to demographics, funding, and the impact of technology.
Research and report on case studies of successful implementations of information technology in small cultural institutions.
Assess best practices in project management.

Reports are to be submitted in Microsoft Word documents in APA format, single-spaced, Times New Roman, 12-point font, with 3/4-inch margins). The cover page and reference pages are not part of the required length. Papers must contain all of the following components and be the required length: Introduction, Body, Conclusion, Reference page, Cover page and page numbers. Students’ papers will be evaluated based on the following criteria: Introduction: 20% organization, 20% clarity, 40% content, and 20% references.

Report Assignment 1: Introduce yourself, your major, your interests and your goals for the capstone. Relate your experiences with small cultural institutions.

Report Assignment 2: Assessment of the contemporary state of small cultural institutions

Report Assignment 3: Review of Multimedia Lab research and publications, and other case studies

Mini-Projects

In-class demonstrations of digital toolkits will build skills in creating assets and interactive prototypes for their display. These projects will iteratively contribute to the collaborative class project of an online digital archive.

Annotated Bibliography (10 sources)

Locate and organize information from a variety of appropriate sources, including research findings and coursework, that relates to a contemporary challenge or theme.
Develop a research- and evidence-based understanding of the challenge or theme.
Use annotated information as preparation for the collaborative class project.
Reflect on research findings to inform contribution to the collaborative class project.

Students will individually build a repository of articles, papers, tutorials and other research that will inform the process of developing applications for small cultural institutions.

Collaborative Class Final Project

Develop digital assets for online archive related to the history of Computer Science.
Research provenance of artifacts, documents, and other assets in the collection.
Implement an interactive searchable website that conforms to archival standards.

Students will work collaboratively to create a digital archive of the of the history of the Department of Computer Science (e.g. the Batcher collection of calculating artifacts). The project will involve digitizing assets, researching and documenting their provenance, and creating an online interactive repository for the collection.

Students should allow a full class for assignment feedback and evaluation. The instructor will notify students in advance if additional time is needed.

All assignments are announced on Brightspace (generally a week prior to the due date) and emailed to students.

All due dates are at 11:59 pm on the date given. Submissions submitted less than 24 hours past the due date will not have points deducted, but after 24 hours will have 1 point per day deducted. Submissions later than 7 days will get no credit. Plagiarized work will recieve no credit, and may be reported to the academic judiciary.

A grade of "I" (incomplete) for the semester is rarely given.

No assignments will be accepted after midnight on the last day of classes for the semester.
