Course Description

Each day, an average of 17 people waiting for organs die in the United States because none could be found for them. About 6,200 people died in the United States in 2004, waiting for organ transplants. The situation is even more grim on Long Island, where the organ-donation consent rate is significantly below the national average. The focus of this LDS 102 course is two-fold: (1) students in the course will learn the facts and issues surrounding organ and tissue donation in the United States; and (2) they will help establish, plan, implement and carry out various projects aimed at increasing organ and tissue donation awareness within the University and the surrounding community.

Course Work

Attendance in class is mandatory and will count toward your final grade. Please make every effort to attend class, as I will be taking attendance. Each student in the class will participate in a course project concerning organ & tissue donation awareness. Students may work on the projects in "teams" of one or more students. Each team will give a 25-minute talk about their course project.

If you have a physical, psychological, medical or learning disability that may impact on your ability to carry out assigned course work, I would urge that you contact the staff in the Disabled Student Services office (DSS), Room 133, Humanities, 632-6748v/TDD. DSS will review your concerns and determine with you what accommodations are necessary and appropriate. All information and documentation of disability are confidential.

Grading

Your grade for the course will be determined by your attendance record, the quality of your course project and associated class presentation.
