HW1

Create an ePortfolio for the class. On the main page, post...

  1. A photo of you in one of your favorite outfits
  2. An image showing the colors that are presumably best for you, based on your personal color analysis. For this analysis, use one of the following websites:
HW2 In Photoshop, create a header image (780x60 pixels, saved as a .png file) in which you write your name in your favorite color using a font that reflects your personality. Make this the custom header image in your ePortfolio.
HW3 Use Adobe Color CC to select a set of 5 colors that you find to be harmonious. Using Photoshop, create a background image (125x125 pixels, saved as a .png file) using only those 5 colors. Make this the page background image for your ePortfolio (repeat horizontally and vertically, starting at the top left).

Modify an image of yourself to demonstrate the effect of visual mix (dithering).

  1. Upload an image of yourself to Photoshop.
  2. Crop the photo as you see fit. Then set the Image Width to 350 pixels. Be sure to set the Resample Image option to Bicubic.
  3. Change the Image -> Mode to Indexed Color.
  4. Set Palette to Local, Colors to 8, Forced to Primaries, with no Transparency. Set the Dithter to whatever looks best.
  5. Save the image as a GIF.
  6. Go to the Color Table for the image. Change 5 of the colors of the palette to the 5 harmonious colors you chose in the previous assignment. Save that image as a new GIF.
  7. Zoom in as far as you can. You will see a pattern of squares, using your colors. Scroll around to find an interesting area and take a screen shot (use Command-Shift-4 on the Mac).
  8. Post both photos and the screen shot in a new page in your ePortfolio. In your reflections, talk about how you achieved the final look in your photo. What colors did you use? Are you happy with the results?
HW5

Download simcon.png and open it up in Photoshop. Modify the Color Table to demonstrate simultaneous contrast. Upload the image to a new page in your ePortfolio, and then write a reflection that includes ...

  1. The RGB and HSB values of the colors you used, and
  2. What can you say about how color values create the simultaneous contrast effect.
HW6 Using Photoshop, create a new image that demonstrates another type of contrast: hue, saturation, brightness, warm/cool, complements, or effect. Upload the image to a new page in your ePortfolio, and a write a reflection regarding the numerical values of the colors that you used in this image, and how they relate to the contrast.

Using Photoshop ...

  1. Write your initials and extrude them, to create a 3D shape.
  2. Create an intersting view of the initials using various types of lighting and surface materials.
  3. Upload the resulting image to a new page in your ePortfolio, and a write a reflection: what parameters helped to make your initials a good logo?
HW8 Using Photoshop, create a 3D image to be viewed with Chroma Depth glasses. Upload the image to a new page in your ePortfolio.
HW9

Find an article about the effects of color on mood, motivation, or productivity. It should be a scholarly article, with conclusions based on empirical data. Write a short (1 page) summary of the article, and bring it to class for discussion. Be sure to include:

  • What were the major findings of the study?
  • What data was collected?
  • What conclusions (if any) can we derive from this?
HW10 Select (or write) a poem or speech that evokes strong emotions for you. Create a Word Cloud based on that poem or speech, and modify the colors to reflect the emotions you feel. Upload the resulting image to a new page in your ePortfolio, include the poem or speech it was based on, and write a reflection on how those colors evoke those emotions for you.
HW11 Select (or write) a short story. Create a colorscript for that story containing at least 3 images (e.g. representing beginning, climax, and end). Create a new page in your ePortfolio where each frame of the colorscript is accompanied by the portion of the story that it reflects.
HW12 Present your work from the semester to the class.
