CSE-590-T02: Special Topics -- Storage Systems, Spring 2025
Instructor: Erez Zadok
Overview Syllabus
This class will cover many topics of data-storage systems, from hardware
devices (SSD, NVM, SMR, etc.), to operating system layers (Linux VFS,
block), to user-level layers, networks (NFSv4, distributed systems), and
more. Additional topics will cover security, performance, energy
efficiency, compression and deduplication, RAID, and futuristic storage
(DNS, Silica).
The course will be lecture based. There will likely be 1-2 exams (midterms
and/or final), some paper reading (and possible presentations by students in
lieu for one exam), and team projects (TBD).

- AI/LLM use. We default to the CS department policy but
the following exceptions. You may use AI/LLM as study aids, to find
information, prepare for exams, and help in assignments. When used in
assignments, you must clearly disclose what AI/LLM you've used, where, and
how much (e.g., in a README file). AI/LLM can't be used during the
closed-book exam.
- Textbooks. There are none for this class. We will post some handouts
and lecture notes. You may use AI/LLM to find information quickly about
topics covered in class.
- Attendance and Participation. I expect students to attend every
lecture and participate in discussions. It's part of your grade.
