New Graduate Certificate Program

This Fall the Computer Science Department at SUNY Stony Brook is starting a new Graduate Certificate Program in Software Engineering. The program is aimed at people from the surrounding area and industry, who have some technical degree that may or may not be in Computer Science, and want to bring themselves up to date in some particular sub-areas of computing.

The program provides bridge courses if necessary to strengthen a student's knowledge of undergraduate material, and then provides a selection from the course offerings of the Master of Science program of the department, chosen in conjuntion with an advisor. In recent semesters typically 2 to 4 of these courses have been taught in the evening (5pm or later) in order to accommodate part-time students. If the demand for this program increases, this number will be adjusted.

The Certificate requires 18 graduate course credits (those courses numbered 500 and above) compared with 30 such credits for the MS degree. It thus offers the prospect of a more timely completion for part time students. If a student subsequently decides to continue for the MS degree the graduate credits can be transfered to the MS program (all except CSE500).

Applications to this program will be accepted through August 1st. For an application form, please contact Pat Saccaro, 632-8462, or kathy@cs.sunysb.edu.
