The Psychology, Linguistics, and
Computer Science Departments at Stony
Brook University are collaborating on a new and innovative project,
funded by the National Science Foundation: "Adaptive Spoken Dialog
with Human and Computer Partners." We seek several qualified and
ambitious graduate students, especially in Linguistics and Psychology,
to join our Ph.D. training programs and collaborate with us. Students
should apply to one of the 3 participating
departments and describe their interest and qualifications in one or
more of these areas:
A. Psycholinguistics: An undergraduate
degree in Psychology, or in another social or cognitive science is
desirable, with coursework in cognition, statistics, experimental
methods. We will conduct empirical studies on the how people adapt to
human partners in conversation or computer partners in spoken dialog
(in perspective, word choice, syntax, dialect, and other aspects of
speaking). Apply at: http://www.psychology.sunysb.edu/psychology/grad/gradapply.htm
B. Human-Computer Interaction/Spoken Dialog Studies: Good
programming skills and experience with speech or multimedia technology
is desirable, with an undergraduate degree in Computer Science,
Engineering, or Cognitive Science. We will be prototyping spoken
dialog systems that can adapt to their human users. Apply at: http://www.grad.sunysb.edu/applying/applying.htm
C. Speech and Dialects: An undergraduate degree in Linguistics
or a related cognitive science with a strong interest in phonology,
phonetics or corpus linguistics is desirable. We will collect and
analyze speech corpora in both controlled (laboratory) and
naturalistic settings. Apply at: http://www.grad.sunysb.edu/applying/applying.htm
Successful applicants will receive
admission
to the Ph.D. program in one of the three participating departments, a
tuition scholarship, and 4-5 years of stipend funding. Stony Brook
University, flagship campus of the S.U.N.Y. system, is a world-class,
student-centered research university located 60 miles from New York
City and was ranked in the top three public research universities in
the US by Graham & Diamond in 1997.
