PhD CS Program, Graduated 2007
I graduated with my bachelors in Computer Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece. Having visited a friend in Stony Brook a few years back, I had a very positive impression of the place and the school, so I decided to apply there, among a few other schools. Being the highest ranked institution to offer me a full scholarship and with a strong algorithmic team in the Computer Science department, it was clearly the best choice.
The Computer Science department at Stony Brook is large, offers many options and quite a few advanced classes, providing a great amount of flexibility to its students. The professors are very approachable, there are many opportunities to interact with them in formal and informal settings, such as the famous donut hour! Read More Collapse For interdisciplinary research, like the bioinformatics algorithms I was involved in, nice opportunities exist to work with strong research teams from other departments, as well as Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor, with which Stony Brook has very close ties. I am currently employed as an assistant professor of computer science at the University of Miami. Graduating from Stony Brook was critical in acquiring this position. Stony Brook has a very good reputation as a top-tier school, especially in Computer Science. I was also fortunate to have a great advisor, Prof. Steven Skiena, who involved me in great projects and provided ample guidance, while giving all the freedom a graduate student would want (and probably should not have)!

Kevin McDonnell PhD CS Program, Graduated 2003
I am an Associate Professor of Computer Science and also Chair of my department at Dowling College in Oakdale, NY, where I have worked since 2004. I earned my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Computer Science at Stony Brook, and both experiences have proven extremely valuable in preparing me to become an educator. Since I teach at a relatively small institution, I need to be flexible enough to teach a wide variety of subjects. The rigorous and broad undergraduate education I received from Stony Brook has been especially valuable in this regard. Also, my doctoral training prepared me very well to engage in research and write grant proposals. I credit much of my professional success to the excellent training I received while a student at Stony Brook and to the many valuable interactions I had with the accomplished Computer Science faculty at the University. In particular I need to single out my thesis advisor, Dr. Hong Qin, for his unwavering support and for the tremendous amount of attention he gave me throughout my graduate studies.

Today I am a neuro and cardio radiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital (affiliated with Harvard Medical School) in Boston. I am the director of their Volume CT Lab, teach at Harvard Medical School and work with MIT folks building robots for doing biopsy.

Jalal Mahmud I was in Dhaka, Bangladesh before coming to Stony Brook University in Aug 2004. I was passionate to enroll into a prestigious graduate program in Computer Science after my undergrad. I wanted to enrich my knowledge, learn more in a special topics in Computer Science, and do research. I applied to a number of graduate programs in US universities and I decided to pursue my graduate studies in Department of Computer Science, Stony Brook University, because it matched my interest and I loved greater NY area. I think I made the right decision!
I learned a lot in Stony Brook University. One of the most challenging part of the PhD program in Stony Brook was its PhD Qual exams for which I had to study very hard. I got tremendous support from my PhD advisor when I started doing research. I had the opportunity to work with extremely talented fellow graduate students, and found my research projects very interesting.

I noticed that graduate students of Stony Brook, Computer Science are well connected with industries, which is reflected by a large number of summer internship every year. I was motivated by that and interned with Google in Summer 2006 and with IBM Research in Summer 2007. A well balanced academic and industry experience helped me later in my career.
Currently, I work in IBM Almaden Research Center from October, 2008. My research work at Stony Brook was focused on Web accessibility, which is a special area of HCI. I believe that Stony Brook's education helped my to find a challenging research position in IBM. Thanks SBU!
