AMS 553 / CET 554 / CSE 529 / MBA 553
Fall 2008
Assignment 4
Due Wednesday, November 12th.
AMS 553 / CET 554 / MBA 553 :
Textbook, p. 171 ( p. 186 in the 3rd. edition ) , Problem 2.19.
Simulate the system for 10 independent replications. Collect point estimates and confidence intervals at the 95% confidence level (or better - see below) for the following performance metrics :
- Mean time that a ship spends in the harbour.
- Probability that an arriving ship does not have to wait for a berth. Note that this is similar to the situation
of Example 9.16, p. 496 ( p. 507 in the 3rd. edition ), of the textbook (and not that of Example 9.21, p. 506 ; p. 517 in the 3rd. edition). I shall be discussing this further in class.
- Average utilization of a berth (not of each berth separately as stated in the problem).
- Average utilization of crane.
Also report the min min time and max max time for ships in the harbour across the 10 runs.
Notes:
- Take account of the Bonferroni Inequality (see textbook, Section 9.7, pp. 537 - 540 ; pp. 542 - 545 in the 3rd. edition), making sure that the ``collective'' confidence level is no worse than 95% .
- A process-oriented implementation will certainly be easier than an event-oriented one. You should find the following Simscript commands/features useful :
INTERRUPT / RESUME and the TIME.A field of a process notice.
